The 4th IUMRS-ICA-97 was successfully held at OVTA of Makuhari, Chiba, from Sept. 16 to 18. The participants and the presentations were about 1,300 over 45 countries and 116 papers, respectively. Some participants had troubles but managed to join the conference. All of them were satisfied with high quality of the presentations and variety of the topics. For this conference, emphasis was cast on poster presentation, participation of Asians and young researchers and invitation of international authorities. Particularly, the 3-hour poster sessions with beverage successfully enhanced essential discussion. These ventures were accomplished by virtue of thorough self-management and cost savings. Oral presentations by Japanese have become skillful, especially by young scientists. More utterances are desired after the presentation, though. There were some complaints of unfairness, among session chairmen and invited speakers, since the reward greatly varied one by one. The organizing committee intentionally took a policy of essential fairness, avoiding superficial equality, and did the best to attain the fair partition, considering participant's circumstances. They would appreciate it, if all the participants consent to this policy. The organizing committee thanks for the great success to all of the relevant members, supporting staffs and volunteers.
