Scope:

Science and technology related to materials, which underpin all aspects of society, constitute one of Japan’s areas of strength. In recent years, with the rapid advancement of science and technology and societal changes driven by the use of AI, IoT, and big data, the role and position of materials research and development (R&D) have been undergoing significant transformation.
In the Fifth Science and Technology Basic Plan, which commenced in April 2016, materials science has been positioned not only as a cross-sectoral foundational technology but also as a key field requiring concrete initiatives toward the realization of a future society such as Society 5.0. In addition, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015, came into effect in January 2016, and efforts toward their achievement are being actively promoted worldwide.
Against this background, this symposium aims to foster discussions on the current status of the social implementation of materials R&D and its future directions, with a view to realizing the society envisioned by Society 5.0 and the SDGs.
This symposium marks its 10th anniversary. While continuing to highlight practical initiatives from technical colleges (KOSEN) related to materials R&D for social implementation, we also aim to expand the scope to include innovative and advanced materials research that contributes to broad industry–academia–government collaboration in Japan. Presentations that incorporate perspectives on social implementation (practical application) are highly encouraged.
We look forward to your active participation in this symposium.
